Supernatural: Baby. An episode filled with misdirection.

Dean

To say this was the best episode this season is understating it a bit. This episode is proof of why we are on season 11 of this show. We have a weekly monster hunt with the boys and they are actually getting along. By getting along I mean they are talking about how to save the world without blaming one another, they are joking and playing pranks, and they are working together towards a common goal.

So what does that make me? Happy? Well yes, but also really really nervous. Their exchange of “Bitch” and “Jerk” was just as heartwarming/nerve wracking as Glenn calling Rick asshole. You know when this happens it’s not going to end pretty (although hopefully those weren’t Glenn’s guts getting torn out, but back to Supernatural). Well I’ve mentioned that this episode is filled with misdirection so let me explain. . .no there is too much. . .let me sum up.

Is Chuck God?

We hear Chuck’s voice over, from way back when the Apocalypse was all we had to worry about, talking about the Impala (Baby) and then Sam praying to God for help. So is Chuck God? I think so but they dance around actually coming out and saying it. We see that connection and then we see someone meant to look like their dad talking to Sam in a dream. Is this God? Is Chuck playing a dude, playing another dude? We are slowly moving towards a God answer and I hope that Chuck is God (but what if God replaced Chuck right before Dean went to go save Sam from Lucifer? Is Chuck really himself again and God just looked like him for a while? OK I’m starting to over think everything).

ummm one of your sons turned into Satan and the other became a demon, but you know. . .

There’s no way Dean can escape

After we hear about how amazing Baby is and are reminded how this car has been with them through it all. It’s there home more than any nasty hotel room or cool bunker. The opening scene is beautifully shot showing all those little details that Chuck talked about way back when Dean saved Sam by getting him to jump into the pit of Hell. We see the initials, the army man, the little imperfections that make her special. . .and then we see the busted window, the blood and Dean lying prone with his hands cuffed behind his back. So he’s screwed right?

Cut to the beginning of this trip where they continually mention that this is a nothing case (but we know better cause we’ve seen Dean hurt and trapped in the back of the wrecked Impala). Lets stop and eat– there’s not a rush– this isn’t a real case– etc. We also see Dean up to no good going to a nasty dive while Sam talks about how he just wants to go to a hotel and get some sleep. Good Sam always doing what he should. Right? Well then we see Dean coming out of the bar the next morning just looking gross and grimy– he’s such a bad boy. Oh wait– no that’s Sam in the back seat with a random waitress. Once again we are lead to believe that Dean’s up to no good to find out the opposite.

Just like it looks like Dean is screwed at the beginning of the episode, but we find out that there is very little in this episode he didn’t have handled. He gets attacked and handles it while on the phone with Cas– then has to rekill the body still while on the phone. Oh and using the windshield wipers to get rid of the werepire’s head? Awesomeness. His line, “Turns out I did shoot the deputy” completes a joke from way back when Lilith was first bothering them.

Of course the wife is a bad guy

After taking care of the monster (at least as good as he could right now) he goes to help Sam who has “saved” the wife of the Sheriff who was being attacked by more monsters. Which this misdirection didn’t surprise me. An unconscious person in the back seat that they haven’t gotten to interrogate yet is most definitely a bad guy too. Which she was.

Just like the deputy seemed like a helpless idiot and turns out to be the monster that had created a herd of monsters just like him. Once again what we see/think isn’t reality.

Is the fun all a misdirection too?

Sam is having fun, they are joking with each other, fighting about how Dean is driving, quoting music lyrics, even had a little sappy moment about how they will always be alone. Dean gives Sam a hard time about his one night stand, Sam and Dean exchange their signature Bitch and Jerk. Everything is great. Yeah there’s a huge evil in the world, but as long as they are together everything is perfect. Seriously it is, which is what worries me. What’s coming up that will balance out all this harmony between the boys?

John (or the person pretending to be John) talks about how Dean has taken care of the car and how the car has taken care of them and then the next day Dean forces it into a barrier. So Sam thinks he’s talking to God and what if he’s getting manipulated by something else? At this point I don’t trust anything that I see. Anything that seems like a good idea I’m questioning pretty hard. How has Michael’s vessel turned into this ex-demon, former Mark of Cain having, Darkness linked dude and Lucifer’s vessel turned into a guy that is looking for help from God?

Overall this was a fun episode to watch. Following the car around the case instead of one or both of the boys was great. The valet that took the car for a joyride was fun to watch especially since this transgression eventually lead to Dean’s salvation from the werepire. The Monster, although scary, was humorously dealt with, Cas, although not seen, was a big help in taking care of the case (and he caught up on Orange is the New Black) and we fell just a little bit more in love with the Impala.

Supernatural: Black. The one where Crowley is the most human of the bunch.

Well here we are at the season 10 premier and as it is with many season premiers the boys are separated. However, unlike previous seasons they aren’t together by the end of the episode.

We start out the episode watching Sam going crazy looking for Dean (but not quite as crazy as he was when Dean was in hell or when Dean was killed for 6 months by the Trickster. Still he’s pushing boundaries and not letting much stop him from trying to find out where Dean is.

The most concerning part of this opening sequence isn’t Sam slicing into demons or losing sleep trying to find a lead, but watching how sick Castiel is now. Yeah we knew that his grace situation was definitely lacking, but no one likes seeing Cas dying in a nasty flop house (btw why isn’t he staying with Sam? Have I forgotten something?). Sam has gone dark before, but Cas doesn’t get a cold much.

Switch to Crowley and Dean living life to the fullest. Just the exchange between Crowley and Dean says so much. They exchange the boys signature bickering phrase (Jerk/Bitch) and then are seen playing crappy pool hall games. You put this scene together with the conversation Crowley has with Sam later and I think we get to the root of all that is going on. Crowley states more than once about how much fun he’s having with Dean and vice versa. Did he get Dean to take the Mark just so that they could be bffs? It sure seems like it from where I’m sitting.  I also have a theory that he’s sending the other demons to attack Dean to make his change even more concrete. It never hurts that Dean is probably making a name for himself and a BAMF in all the demon circles.

Cas’s story this episode doesn’t sit well with me. It’s not just because he’s not on his A game it’s because he’s willing to kill another angel to get him to obey Heaven.  Since when has Cas been an angel that listens to Heaven.  Any time he is that kinda angel it usually ends very badly. I just feel like he’s still being manipulated and you’d think by now Castiel would be wise to such tactics.

Wait– I thought we were ignoring the whole Amelia story line.

The other thing that doesn’t sit well with me is how easily Sam gets fooled by creepy Army dude. I mean seriously– his car suspiciously breaks down on a dark abandoned road while he’s on his way to track down Dean (which he knows Crowley knows he’s coming) and doesn’t doubt the intentions of a guy that pulls up immediately behind him to help? Where’s his gun? Where’s his automobile know how?  The Impala might be Dean’s, but he’s been around it long enough to know how a car works. It just seemed too convenient a trap and something that Sam wouldn’t have been caught unawares about.

The episode wraps up with Sam zip tied to a chair about to die and crazy army dude frustrated that Dean doesn’t seem to care about it (btw– Sam had Dean’s number this whole time?). Dean just drives off alone promising CAD his eventual death and seems to genuinely not care if Sam lives or dies.

Well. Isn’t that nice.

Not only are the boys at odds they don’t seem to be kissing and making up anytime soon. Will Dean be cured? Will Crowley get his way and have Dean at his right hand in Hell? Will Sam be killed (ummm no) and will Cas die from lack of grace (no please?)?

Well even with my questions one thing is for sure: Season 10 is setting up to be pretty amazing and I’m definitely excited to see what is coming.

Heaven Can’t Wait: In Which Castiel Pretends to be a Human and Crowley Pretends to be Evil

Cas

A good friend of mine and I had a conversation yesterday about superheros and why our favorites were are favorites.  I stated that Spiderman and Captain America were at the top of my list whereas Superman was at the top of his.  Of course the why of mine is very deep and thoughtful.  Or at least it’s more than I really like red and blue.  I love Spiderman and Captain America because they are regular guys who just happen to have super powers.  Peter Parker IS Peter Parker and when he puts on the suit he pretends to be Spiderman.  However, Superman is Superman.  He IS an alien with crazy powers pretending to be Clark Kent.  My favorites just seem more real to me.  They spend their lives trying to live while saving people in the process. (Although I will say that Tom Welling  and Henry Cavill make me love Superman too).  I was always more interested in the bad guys in the Superman and Batman universe than I was the good guys.  They were too perfect.  Too inhuman.

Well after having such an in depth conversation on superheros (as normal people do) right before watching this episode made me notice a few things more acutely about this episode.  Cas is spending his days pretending to be Steve the Human (kinda like Finn the Human but with less emotions).  He’s trying to fit in.  He’s trying to date people that aren’t trying to kill him.  He feels like he needs to cut all supernatural ties.  Of course Dean being a total douche and kicking him out of the bunker probably isn’t helping at all.  He’s not though.  He’s not human.  He’s an angel and needs to stop pretending.  He was never perfection like Superman, but he was a very powerful good force and even though he’s human now he still can be a powerful force for good. He began to stop pretending there at the end when he tried to banish the other angel before he could hurt that baby and before he could hurt him.  Then, there at the end, he seemed to embrace what he is when he stabbed hot pink angel in the chest.  Will he be able to carve out a life as a human?  Who are we kidding, they’ll find a way to fix this or he’ll die.  One or the other.  Personally I hope for the former.

CasandDean

I could feel Cas’ confusion at Dean’s presence throughout the episode.  I thought this still captured that.

Misha casdate

I forget at times how handsome Misha Collins is.  Also Nora totally played Cas and knew what she was doing. I disapprove.

Now I’m not blaming him for pretending, I’m just saying that Castiel will never be able to pull of human as long as he remembers his angel past.  He’s continually confused by human behavior.  His discussion with the baby just reinforced the fact that even as a fallen angel he relied on his powers to get him through all situations.  The thing I believe that he’s not pretending about is being hurt by Dean.  His offer to help Dean and Sam find a fix for all of this was one last cry for help and Dean shut him down.  Again.  Dean and Sam are idiots though.  Castiel can probably read that language that they just made deals with Crowley to read.  Why didn’t they just ask Cas?  Or at least as him to verify?  Crowley lies.  He at least definitely doesn’t tell the whole truth.

CrowleySamKevin

Poor Kevin, as much as I love Crowley I know Kevin must be so upset that he hasn’t been killed yet.

Now Crowley.  He’s pretending too.  Big evil King of Hell who can now feel emotions.  I think he came to the realization that he is not the evil SOB that he thinks he is after he tried calling Abaddon. Don’t get me wrong.  He USED to be evil.  He USED to be that guy, but now, now he was almost cured and has been held captive for a while now.  He now feels his power stripped away.  His kingdom is being brought down by Abaddon, there is no end in sight of getting away from the Winchesters, and Kevin definitely wants to kill him.  I’m curious to see what happens from here.  Will he continue to pretend to be evil or will be gradually come to terms with his impending goodness?  What was up with injecting Kevin’s blood at the end?  Will that do something to Kevin or is he trying to receive some more humanity?

Crowleyblood

What??

Crowley and Castiel were the biggest pretenders in this episode, but really there is pretending going on all over the place.  Sam is hunter with an angel inside him pretending to not be there, Dean is a brother pretending to be on the up and up and a friend pretending to not want Castiel around, Kevin is a hunter pretending that he could become the advanced placement student that he used to be.

Favorite lines in the episode:

Dean: My dates usually end when I run out of singles.

Crowley to Kevin: What’s wrong Short Round?  Afraid of needles?

I feel the build up to something big.  I have said before that I think Sam will find out in the next episode, but we shall see. (I don’t like the boys fighting so I hope I’m wrong).

Supernatural Recap: Devil May Care

Can I just start out saying that I love the new opening graphic? (Oh I should also take a moment and say that there WILL be spoilers in this post so if you haven’t watched last night’s episode you should go elsewhere). I love that they change the opener every season to reflect whatever big bad they are going to be dealing with that season and the angel wings are just enough messed up looking to remind you how messed up (most) angels are.  I’m going to post it again, just for fun.

Season 9 Supernatural

So they are all back together.  Sam, Dean, Kevin and Crowley and understandably Kevin is pissed that Crowley is not only alive, but hanging out in the bunker with them.  I think this is a moment that Sam and Dean show how much they have forgotten about normal people’s feelings.  Yes they can handle Crowley being in the other room, but I don’t know exactly how they expected Kevin to be cool with it.

OK enter Abaddon, with an awesome regeneration scene (I have to say her makeup and nails were rocking it for someone how had just been burnt to a crisp).  Do you know who scared me more than Abaddon though?  Scary-Demon-Grandma.  Seriously, “kids love grandmas”? Yeah I kinda wanted to vomit thinking about that creep going after little kids.  Abaddon is shaping up to be a pretty good big bad which has to be a hard thing to come up with now a days in Supernatural writers land.  I mean come on, they’ve killed a few badass demons, Lucifer, and the Leviathan to name a few.  They even in a sense beat the evil inside of themselves (kinda).  I’m interested to see how this pissing contest between her and Crowley ends up.  I’m assuming that he’s not going to be kept tied up much longer and then the real battle will start.  How cool would it be to see Crowley seeking their protection from Abaddon.  I think that’s what’s going to end up happening.  After all Crowley is a lesser evil.  Kinda doubting Kevin would be cool with that though.

KevinFreakinSolo

Speaking of Kevin.  Wow. KevinFREAKIN’Solo was on point.  I thought the boys were screwed when they called Kevin for a cover story, but he got the job done with flair.  Now overall Kevin needs to have that kind of confidence about everything.  I know this isn’t what he would like to be doing, but there is no way that he could waltz back into his Ivy League life even if he had the chance.  As soon as he can accept that and accept that what he is doing is way more important than anything else he would have ever have been able to do the sooner he can be happy.

Now Crowley and Kevin in the bunker together was always a bad idea and I think turned out as best as it could have.  Of course Crowley was going to needle Kevin about his mom, about how messed up his life is, well about everything.  Once again I don’t think that the boys remember that Kevin isn’t a hunter.  He has seen a lot, but he’s still a young adult.  Best line of the exchange: “I torture all my friends.”  I’m sure Crowley does and maybe Crowley does think that they are friends.  Seriously wouldn’t surprise me.

The whole Abaddon battle was cool, but I knew the guys had it under control.  I kinda figured that Sam/Zeke would save the day (or as I will call him Sangel).  Surely Sam will start doubting all of this though and how pissed is he going to be when he realizes all the lies Dean is telling him.  Also the wings made me believe that maybe Zeke is telling the truth about not being healthy himself.  Feathers were falling out and he was not as impressive as Cas was the first time he showed off his wings.  Best line of the night? Dean talking to Sangel: “Zeke? ImmacallyouZeke.”

Sangel

I actually was more on edge with what was happening with Kevin and Crowley, but I did really enjoy the exchange between Abaddon and Dean.  Mostly just because it reminded Dean (and us) that things could be worse.  And we got to look at Dean a lot.  Which is always awesome.

AbaddonandDean

Crowley may not have won the quick escape, but he did plant seeds of doubt in Kevin.  Is his mom really dead?  If she’s alive why not let Crowley go to get her back?  Maybe he did make a deal with Crowley off camera and he’s just biding his time until he can get Crowley out of there.  I think Dean actually handled the situation he came back to well.  He reminded Kevin that he was family, that they were willing to die to keep him safe, and he tried to help him come to terms with his mom. BUT, and this is a huge BUT, once again Dean doesn’t put himself in Kevin’s place.  What if Crowley said something like that about Sam, or what if old Yellow Eyes had said something like that about their dad or mom a few years ago.  Dean and Sam would have dropped everything just to make sure that Crowley wasn’t telling the truth.  Can they not accept that Kevin would do the same?  I think Dean glossing over this is going to come back to bite him later.  All the feels between Kevin and Dean were overwhelming though.  Poor Kevin.  Poor Dean.  Really poor everyone at this point.  Well, I guess Garth is the only character that is chugging along happily.

We’ll see next week how Cas is doing. I’m guessing not well.  This season has started off with a bang and it has be excited to see what is going to happen next.  I’m loving it since I felt season eight was confusing and not up to the standards I expect from this show.  I have hopes that Zeke is really trying to help and wonder if he’ll make another appearance soon. (Maybe to speak to Cas?)

Saving People, Hunting Things, The Family Business

Supernatural is one of my favorite shows (OK so I have about 10 shows I could say that about, but I can’t help that I become obsessed with so many things!)  Last year at Dragon Con I did a thrown together cosplay of Sam all by myself and had a total of 1 person know who I was (he was dressed as Cas so that helped).  This year I wanted to do it up right and instead of doing straightforward rule #63 changes I decided to mix it up even more with a steampunk slant.  I peer pressured my brother and his friend to be the Dean and Castiel to my Sam.  Here are the results:
